  24. I. WHY WOULD I USE HP JETPS.NLM
  25. ______________________________________________________

  27. Hewlett-Packard's JetPS.NLM is a NetWare Loadable Module (NLM) that runs on 
  28. NetWare 3.x and 4.x file servers.  This NLM provides the same NetWare printing 
  29. functionality as HP's Jet Direct products; it allows you to manage and 
  30. control a peripheral attached to a parallel port on a NetWare file server.  
  31. This product can be used as a replacement for Novell's PSERVER.NLM.  
  32.  
  33. Like PServer, JetPS will service print queues on one or more file servers.  
  34. However, JetPS.NLM has added features, as Table 1, Product Comparison, 
  35. details.

  52. JetPS.NLM has a built-in IEEE 1284 driver that it uses to communicate with 
  53. peripherals through a standard parallel port or any other IEEE 1284-compliant 
  54. port hardware.  JetPS.NLM's IEEE 1284 driver is backward compatible with 
  55. existing peripherals that use the PC parallel interface (commonly referred 
  56. to as the Centronics interface) but will take advantage of the higher 
  57. performance and bi-directionality of an IEEE 1284-compliant peripheral's 
  58. interface.

  61. Requirements
  62. ************************

  64. JetPS.NLM is compatible with the following 3.x and 4.x versions:
  65.  
  66. --  NetWare 3.11 and above
  67. --  NetWare 4.02 and above
  68.  
  69. NOTE:   This version of JetPS.NLM does not use NetWare Directory Services 
  70. (NDS).  Instead, it uses Bindery Services.  
  71.  
  72. Each time JetPS is loaded on a file server, it requires 500 Kbytes of RAM and 
  73. will use 500 Kbytes of small memory pool space.

  76. Installation
  77. ************************

  79. To install JetPS.NLM, copy all of the NLM files from this distribution to the
  80. SYSTEM directory of the file server where the NLM will run.  The latest
  81. version of JetPS.NLM can be obtained from one of the electronic services
  82. listed in the "Software, Driver, and Flash Image Upgrades" section.

  85. Using JetPS.NLM
  86. ************************

  88. You can load JetPS.NLM up to four times on a file server to service 
  89. peripherals on any combination of parallel ports--LPT1 through LPT4.
  90.        
  91. To load JetPS.NLM, from the NetWare system console prompt:
  92.  
  93. 1.   Type "LOAD JETPS <port number>"
  94.  
  95. For example, if you would like to run JetPS.NLM to service a printer attached 
  96. to LPT2, type "LOAD JETPS 2".
  97.  
  98. You can add this line to your autoexec file to automatically load JetPS.NLM
  99. when the server boots.

  102. Trouble Shooting JetPS.NLM
  103. ************************
  104.  
  105. NetWare 3.xx servers sometimes run out of memory in the short term memory
  106. pool.  If JetPS.NLM will not load and NetWare displays one or both of the
  107. following messages:
  108.  
  109.     "Insufficient returnable memory to load NLM"
  110.  
  111.     "Cache memory allocator out of available memory"
  112.  
  113. follow these steps to increase the amount of short term memory
  114. allocations.
  115.  
  116. 1.    To find out how much memory the server is currently configured to
  117.     allocate to the short term memory pool, type:
  118.  
  119.         "set maximum alloc short term memory"
  120.  
  121. 2.    Place the following statement into the startup.ncf file:
  122.  
  123.         "set maximum alloc short term memory = <number>"
  124.  
  125.     with <number> set to a value at least 500,000 larger than the
  126.     current short term memory pool size.  For example:
  127.  
  128.         "set maximum alloc short term memory = 3145728"
  129.  
  130. 3.    Restart the server.

  134. II.  CONFIGURING JETPS.NLM
  135. ______________________________________________________
  136.  
  137. You can configure JetPS.NLM to operate either as an RPrinter or a QServer.  
  138.  
  139. Novell defines RPrinter as a remote printer interface.  RPrinter is typically 
  140. run as a TSR on a NetWare client to make a client-attached printer available 
  141. to other users on the network.  You can configure an RPrinter to connect to 
  142. Novell's PServer (either PServer.EXE or PServer.NLM).  PServer pulls print 
  143. jobs from a NetWare queue and sends them to RPrinter, then RPrinter sends the 
  144. print job data to the printer.  When operating as an RPrinter, JetPS.NLM will 
  145. connect to PServer and send print job data to the file server-attached 
  146. peripheral it is servicing.
  147.  
  148. HP defines QServer as a high-performance, remote printer interface.  QServer 
  149. pulls print jobs directly from a NetWare queue and sends the print job data 
  150. to the peripheral.  The Administrator can configure HP's QServer to service 
  151. up to 64 queues spread across as many as 16 file servers.  For each remote 
  152. server it services queues from, HP's QServer, like PServer, uses a licensed 
  153. connection.  As an NLM, JetPS.NLM does not use a licensed connection to the 
  154. server it is running on, even if it is servicing queues on that 
  155. server.  To increase performance, HP recommends running in QServer mode.

  158. III.  CONFIGURING AND MANAGING YOUR NETWORK  
  159.       PRINTER
  160. ______________________________________________________
  161.  
  162. In order to configure and manage your network printer, you will need to load 
  163. the HP JetAdmin software, the same software that HP provides for HP JetDirect 
  164. products. For both JetPS.NLM and JetDirect, HP JetAdmin provides the same 
  165. advanced control, status, and diagnostic services.  As a result, when using 
  166. HP JetAdmin with JetPS.NLM for server-connected printers and 
  167. HP JetDirect for direct-connected network printers, you will have uniform 
  168. view and control of all of your network printers.  
  169.  
  170. NOTE:   For optimum performance, HP recommends that you set printer I/O 
  171. buffering to 100K.
  172.

  179. IV.  WHY WOULD I USE HP JETDIRECT PRINT SERVER PRODUCTS?
  180. ______________________________________________________
  181.  
  182. HP JetPS.NLM is based on the Hewlett-Packard JetDirect print server 
  183. products.  Both allow management and control of peripherals attached to 
  184. parallel ports using the HP JetAdmin software.  However, unlike JetPS.NLM, 
  185. JetDirect print server products allow location flexibility by directly 
  186. connecting printers to the network users.  Jet Direct products also increase 
  187. performance by eliminating parallel port bottlenecks.  Finally, JetDirect 
  188. products support multiple protocols and networks, as illustrated in 
  189. Tables 2 and 3.
